Can One Waxed Cotton Jacket Work On and Off the Bike?
Some motorcycle jackets look like they should only ever be worn on a motorcycle.
You ride somewhere, park up and that's pretty much the end of the jacket's day. Waxed cotton is a little different. Depending on the jacket, you can wear it for the ride, grab a coffee, head into town and still not look like you've forgotten to take your riding gear off.
That's a big reason waxed jackets for bikers remain popular.
It Comes Down to the Jacket
Not every waxed cotton jacket is made with exactly the same use in mind.
Some of Speedwear's designs have that proper old-school motorcycle feel, with storm flaps, adjustable cuffs, tartan linings and useful pockets. They look at home on a bike, obviously, but don't look strange when you're walking around town either.
That's handy when you don't want to carry another jacket around all day.
Why Does Waxed Cotton Work So Well Off the Bike?
The material helps.
Waxed cotton has a slightly different feel from ordinary cotton, and the finish gives it some resistance to wind and light rain. That works nicely on a ride, but it's just as useful when you're walking around outside afterwards.
Then there is the look. Pair one with jeans and boots and it doesn't suddenly feel like technical riding equipment.
You can just keep it on.
But can one jacket really work everywhere?
Not quite.
A heavy jacket with a thick lining can be brilliant on a cold morning and far too warm once you've been indoors for an hour. Fabric weight, lining and the cut all make a difference, especially in changeable UK weather.
So, think about when you normally ride before choosing one.
Don't Assume It Is Protective
This is an easy mistake to make.
A waxed jacket can look very much like motorcycle gear without actually being protective riding equipment. Speedwear sells traditional waxed cotton jackets without armour, alongside technical options such as the Pulford, which has CE-approved protectors and certified protective construction.
So check the actual specification.
If a jacket doesn't have the protective features you need, don't treat it as riding protection just because it looks the part.
There's Also Something Nice About How Waxed Cotton Ages
It doesn't stay looking brand new forever, and that's sort of the point.
The wax finish changes with use. Creases develop, worn areas lose some of their sheen and the jacket gradually takes on its own character.
A few years in, it can look better rather than simply older.
Speedwear has built much of its range around that traditional feel, with waxed cotton jackets sitting alongside leather jackets, riding shirts, gloves and other motorcycle clothing.
For a rider who wants one jacket to cover the ride and the rest of the day, that versatility is hard to ignore.
Looking for one jacket to do both?
Have a look through Speedwear's waxed jackets for bikers and compare the classic and technical options carefully. Start with how and where you ride, then find a style you're actually happy to keep wearing once the bike is parked.
